UTHSC Windows Vista Resource Page

On January 30, 2007 Microsoft will release its newest operating system, Windows Vista.  At this time, Information Technology Services does NOT recommend the purchase or installation of Vista unless you have a pressing business need that requires you to do so.

Vista will be available commercially in several different bundles.  If you are installing this on your work computer, you must install the Windows Vista Business edition.  It will be available in General Stores.

For our customers who do run Windows Vista Business, Information Technology Services will make every possible effort to provide you with efficient and effective technical support through our Helpdesk call center and onsite technical services.

Information Technology Services' Recommended Configuration for any Windows Vista workstation:
2.5 Ghz processor or better
At least 1 GB RAM memory
High end graphics card with at least 128 MB video memory

Microsoft has developed an upgrade advisor tool to evaluate your current PC for Windows Vista compatibility. You can download and run the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor from the Microsoft web site. It will let you know if your hardware meets key requirements to run specific versions of Windows Vista.

Which UTHSC systems have not tested functional with Windows Vista?

What's the difference between 'Vista Capable' and 'Vista Premium Ready'?

Vista will come in various configurations with different capabilities. There will be a home version and a business version, with variations in each. A 'Vista Capable' machine is the minimum standard needed to run Vista. A 'Vista Premium Ready' PC is one that is able to utilize the advanced 'Aero' interface, as well as additional capabilities.

What is the Aero interface?

Windows Aero is an environment with an additional level of visual sophistication. Users with computers that do not have advanced video cards will not be able to realize these enhanced capabilities.
